System.Data.OracleClient requires Oracle client software version 8.1.7 or greater..
I had encounted this issue before and found the solution for it. And stupidly the same issue came back to me and I couldn’t resolve it!!!.. sigh.. I could remember the solution partially and recall that it’s related to oracle’s installation folder security setting.
Anyways, this is the way to resolve the issue mentioned in this blog entrie’s title.
- go to oracle installation folder, which is most likely “c:\oracle\ora92″
- right click and select properties
- go to *security* tab
- find *Authenticated Users* and select it
- uncheck *read and execute* box in the permission
- re-check *read and execute*
- click *OK*
After the precedure, it should just work.

Thanks for the post. Spent all morning trying to figure out what’s wrong.
I have the same problem, but this “trick” failed to solve it on my machine…
Hasn’t worked for me. I’m running 9.0.1.
